We are the Green Bay, WI guild for all fiber arts.
We are the original Maker’s Movement! Traditional fiber arts experienced a renewal when Traveling Treadlers was founded in the early 1970’s. Our guild was founded to educate, demonstrate, preserve, and also to innovate traditional fiber arts in the Green Bay area. We are passionate about working in different mediums and helping others develop their skills.
Traveling Treadlers fosters education by hosting a "Show and Share" each meeting, sponsoring educational programming, exhibiting for shows & schools, and offering an annual member scholarship.
You are invited to visit our meetings and join in the fun. We welcome makers of any ability and all fiber art forms. Membership is offered at a low annual fee and includes many oppurtunities to share, network, exibit, learn, and create. Traveling Treadlers offers 2 free preview meetings. We kindly request your financial support to help continue our mission after the preview meetings. Attendance at meetings is not required for membership.
Dyeing is the application of dyes or pigments on textile materials such as fibers, yarns, and fabrics with the objective of achieving color with desired fastness. Dyeing may be done at many different points in the artistic process to achieve many different results.
Hand Spinning is the art of twisting plant, animal, and synthetic fibers into yarn. The process of twisting fiber into yarn may be done with either a drop spindle, spinning wheel, or hand twisting.
Weaving is the method of textile making in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. Hand weaving has many forms including tapestry weaving, production weaving, inkle weaving, stick weaving, and back strap weaving.
Knitting and Crochet use needles or hooks to make loops with yarn that are connected together to form cloth.
Felting is a method of massive entanglement of fibers to lock them together into a fabric. Felting may be done by a wet process or using special needles.
The wonderful thing about Fiber Art is it doesn't stop with Spinning, Weaving, Dyeing, Felting, and Needlework. There are so many other forms including Quilting, Embroidery, Appliqué, Rug Hooking, Braiding, Macrame, and any other method you can think of to turn fibers into art. Traveling Treadlers embraces all of these art mediums and also their use together.
The purpose of our gatherings is to provide support for each other as well as to work on our group activities.
Our regular meetings are casual and everyone is encouraged to bring a project to work on during the meeting.
We host a "Show & Share" each meeting where everyone has the opportunity to share their work. Feel free to bring something you have made to share with the group.
Traveling Treadlers currently meets in Howard at the Townline Pub & Grill. We are usually seated in the main dining room. Townline is available to serve food and drink at your own cost during the meeting.
